Why Happy Boxes?

Storage Ideas and Tips

Storing and packing just got easier! Here are a few helpful storage ideas:

  1. Make an inventory list of all items being stored in the storage unit. Keep this list in a safe place.
  2. Purchase a variety of box sizes, plenty of tape and markers to label. Keep in mind your fragile items and purchase bubble wrap, dish pack sets and packing peanuts for added protection.
  3. Don't forget to use valuable space inside drawers and larger appliances, such as stoves and refrigerators, to store small items: towels, linens, toys, etc.
  4. Pack books flat to protect their spine. Don't put fragile items in with books and pack books in smaller boxes as they will be heavier.
  5. Break down large items such as bed frames, tables, and large furniture, and don't forget to keep all parts (screws and smaller items) together by taping them to the item.
  6. Leave a small space for ventilation between your items and the walls.
  7. Wrap furniture legs with protective bubble wrap, furniture covers or pads to prevent scratching.
  8. Label boxes on all sides for easy identification.
  9. When boxing items that can shift, stuff newspaper in the empty areas to prevent the boxes from collapsing when other items are stacked on top of them.
  10. Make sure fragile boxes are placed on top of heavier, less delicate boxes. Be sure not to over pack boxes as they can get heavy and dangerous.
  11. Treat wood surfaces before storing and place blankets over them if storing items on top to prevent scratching.
  12. Place frequently accessed items towards the front of your unit. Less frequently needed items should be placed toward the rear of your unit.
  13. Dishes and glasses should be individually wrapped in wrapping paper and placed in dish pack boxes. Nest your cups and bowls with paper or small bubble wrap between them. Improvise with wash cloths and towels.
  14. Boxes that are tightly sealed with packing tape will prevent dust from entering.
  15. Use furniture covers or moving pads to keep items off the floor of the unit. Always wrap mattresses and furniture with fabric with plastic wrap and stack on their side. It is also a good idea to wrap fabric cushions individually and place on top.
  16. When storing business files, leave a walkway down the center of your unit to make accessing items easier.
  17. A refrigerator or freezer should be thoroughly cleaned and air dried then stored with its door slightly ajar to prevent mold or musty odors from lingering dampness.
  18. Do not store anything flammable (such as paint or other chemicals) or perishable.
  19. Drain any fluids prior to storing snow blowers, lawnmowers, and other equipment; do not store hazardous or combustible materials.
  20. Do not store food, hazardous or flammable materials, or live plants or animals in your unit. There are laws restricting certain items, please refer to your lease for details.
  21. Purchase a secure, high quality lock. One of the most highly recommended is the disk lock, which is available at your Happy Boxes Self Storage Rental Office.
